AI-Powered Malaria Detection

Saving lives one image at a time...

Our goal is to get our AI-powered malaria detection solution into the hands of frontline healthcare workers in areas of great need. Utilizing a smartphone and our AI-enabled solution, workers can capture and analyze images of eyes on the spot - to help identify patients who may require further health screening or immediate treatment. This process can occur anywhere, with or without Internet connectivity.

Why does it matter?

Behind every statistic is a family. Malaria still claims roughly 600,000+ lives each year — most of them children under the age of five. Despite decades of progress, it remains one of the world's deadliest infectious diseases.

Why Malaria Matters

282 million cases worldwide.
610K deaths annually.
75% are children.

The Project Objective

Our goal is to equip frontline health workers with a smartphone malaria identification tool that enables AI-powered malaria detection. By leveraging AI-analyzed images of the eye, we can help identify patients who may need urgent testing and treatment, ultimately enhancing health screening efforts.

An Important Note: This is a decision-support tool for AI-powered malaria detection - not a replacement for standardized testing or confirmed diagnosis. We want to assist health workers in remote settings with health screening to identify cases faster, rather than bypassing the clinical process. Every flagged patient still receives proper testing, utilizing smartphone malaria tools to enhance accuracy.

How it Works in the Field

An Easy 4 Step Process...

Step 1: Complete form by health worker.
Step 2: Capture eye images with the app.
Step 3: Link to Study ID with de-identified test results.
Step 4: Upload & Sync data securely with connectivity.

Protecting People & Data

Ethics approvals, consent, de-identification, and data-use agreements in research.

Since 2020, our platform has been used in COVID-related clinical settings outside the US, where we've captured over 25,000 eye images and learned what works in real-world conditions for health screening. This experience has significantly shaped how we design field workflows and care for participants, enabling us to incorporate AI-powered malaria detection and smartphone malaria tools into our initiatives. Additionally, our data can be formatted to global standards like HL7 FHIR, ensuring seamless integration with existing health information systems. Our malaria program will operate under its own ethics approvals and partner-led governance, built from the ground up with each collaborator.
